The Human Genome Project
How much of who we are is determined by our genes? How similar are the genes of people living in different parts of the world? Which diseases are genetic? The findings of the Human Genome Project, begun in 1990, will help answer these questions and many others. To find the answers, scientists collected blood, hair, skin cell, and saliva samples of people from all over the world. They then retrieved the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from these samples, which is found in the body's 46 chromosomes. Scientists involved in the project have already finished mapping, or "sequencing," DNA molecules, showing the location of genes. Now that the sequencing is finished, researchers have begun the long process of analyzing the results to find out how these genes function. To scientists, this analysis is like Europe's discovery of the New World.

Scientists' findings so far are both surprising and promising. One of the unexpected findings is that it turns out people have far fewer genes than scientists thought. Before the project, the scientific world had assumed that there were 100,000 genes in the human body responsible for not only physical characteristics like hair and eye color but also certain behaviors and aptitudes. However, there are in fact only 34,000 genes. This means that there is more at work than just genes in determining why one person commits a crime and another is good at music or sports.

Another interesting finding is that although groups of people around the world may look different, they are actually very similar genetically. For instance, there is only a very small number of genes accountable for the difference in skin color.

Some of the most hopeful research coming out of the project relates to the study of disease. When the project first began, the medical world knew of about 100 human disease genes. Because of the project, scientists have identified more than 1400 disease genes so far for such conditions as diabetes, Alzheimer's, and certain forms of colon and breast cancer. By studying how these genes work, medical researchers can try to improve treatments. This could include developing more effective medicines as well as manipulating the genes themselves to cure or even prevent illness. Since scientists have already mapped the genomes of other organisms, including the mouse, rat, and fruit fly, they can now compare these to the human genome to learn how different organisms evolve, react to disease, and respond to environmental pollutants.

What is the author's purpose for using the phrase "surprising and promising" to describe the scientists' findings?
1.to convey objectivity about the outcome of the project
2.to illustrate the confidential nature of the project's findings
3.to criticize the scientists for their lack of prior knowledge
4.to show support for the project's compelling results

Answers

The statement simply illustrates that the findings of the scientists are surprising and promising. The writer has used figurative language.

Comparing one thing to another is the definition of figurative language. The language employed in this situation is figurative rather than literal.

Simile, metaphor, allusion, and other literary devices are examples of figurative language. The implication is that the scientists' discoveries are unexpected and exciting: "To scientists, this analysis is like Europe's discovery of the New World."

Figurative language is when words are used in a way that differs from their usual order and meaning in order to convey a complex meaning, colorful writing, clarity, or emotional comparison. It alludes to something without mentioning it directly by using a regular sentence.

Step 1
The first step in this assignment is selecting a movie/film to analyze based on concepts in Interpersonal Communication. One season of a television show will also work for this assignment, but going beyond one season is likely too much.

Step 2
Once you have your film selected, you should answer the following questions based on that movie. Be sure to completely answer each part of the question. You should explain this well enough that your professor does not even need to watch the film to understand the concepts you are referencing.

Start with a one paragraph general overview of the film, then respond to the following:

You have analyzed the characteristics of a competent communicator. Which character in this film do you think is the most competent communicator based on the traits we discussed? Why?
As you learned in this course, culture and gender have a big impact on the way we communicate. What are some of the culture and gender differences that effect interpersonal communication in the movie? Provide at least two for culture and two for gender.
Perception influences every aspect of communication. Explain how the main character’s perceptions likely affect their relationships. Then explain how your own perception influences the way you view the movie.
As we know, language is a big factor in interpersonal communication. Give at least 3 examples of language use in the movie between some of the main characters.
While language is important, we also know that nonverbal communication plays a major role in how we communicate (content vs. relational message). There are likely many facial expressions in the movie, among other nonverbal expressions, that say a lot more than words. Give at least 3 examples of nonverbal communication in the movie.
How does listening impact the way the characters in the movie relate to one another? Give at least two examples.
How do the main characters portray their emotions? Give three examples.
As we know, conflict and power are a big part of our interaction with others. Give two examples of how conflict and/or power were displayed in the movie.
The communication climate is another important aspect to consider when analyzing a communication situation. Explain one example of a supportive communication climate in the film. Also describe one example of a defensive climate.
Your choice – select any other aspect of Interpersonal Communication that has not already been discussed in the questions above and explain how it relates to the movie. For example, you could talk about some of the later chapters in the text. How is social exchange theory evident in the film? In what ways are Knapp’s Relational Stages portrayed? Pick out anything else you'd like to (that hasn't been mentioned already in the first nine questions).

Answers

According to step one, the movie selected for analysis of the concept of interpersonal communication is: The Blind Side

What is the general overview of the film?

The protagonist or lead character in the movie is an underprivileged African-American youngster who is adopted by a white family out of compassion.

The teenager's struggles are the subject of one section of the novel, while his development and his role in the football game are the subject of the other section.

The movie The Blind Side is a great example of interpersonal communication principles. The movie, which is based on real incidents and occasions, examines the obstacles people have to overcome to achieve in life.

The sequence where Michael Oher returns to Memphis and encounters a completely different environment forces him to interact in cross-cultural communication.

listening;perceptual accentuation;feedback, and nonverbal clues,

are the focal point of the theoretical understanding illustrated in the movie.

Which character in this film do you think is the most competent communicator based on the traits we discussed? Why?

The character that is most competent in the above movie as already hinted is Michael Oher. This is because he is able to navigate the challenges associated with interpersonal communication in a multicultural situation.

What are some of the culture and gender differences that effect interpersonal communication in the movie?

In the movie, the leaning on gender differences is not really emphasized. However there is a strong play when it comes to cultural differences.

For example, Michael is first assumed to not fit in with the family due of his differences (he is black and the family is white).

Even while the connection does not seem promising at first, after Michael has lived with the family for a long, everyone learns to deal with each other's growing relationships.

How does the main character’s perceptions likely affect their relationships? How does your own perception influences the way you view the movie?

The Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT) is well demonstrated in the movie, where uncertainties complicated the start of the connections and relationships.

People may therefore lessen the ambiguity in relationships via knowledge and understanding. This is what happens exactly in the movie.  The above is also apparent to those who watch the movie.

What are least 3 examples of language use in the movie between some of the main characters?

One example of when suggestive language is used in the movie is when their language begins to suggest the growing intimacy between members of the family.

Example:

Michael being more vulnerable says to his new family "It's nice, I never had one before”

Collins Tuohy on the other hand soon starts to refer to Michael as "brother".

The other example is captured when Sean Junior tell Michael that he has to be of good behavior around the ladies.

What is an example of non-verbal communication in the movie?

In this particular movie, the form of communication that holds the center stage is non-verbal communication.

A great illustration is when, before to the collision, Michael motions to Sean Junior with his hand and eyes, pleading with the mother to let him use the automobile.

How does listening impact the way the characters in the movie relate to one another?

The idea of listening is clearly present throughout the movie.

Interpersonal connections rely heavily on listening, which is the capacity to effectively hear and evaluate signals during communication.

This is well seen in the movie when Ann and Michael's history teacher, Miss Sue, pay attention to them, which enhances Michael's performance.

How do the main characters portray their emotions?

The entire theme of the move is not just about the underprivileged African- American boy who finds companionship in an all white family, it is also about how the white family is able to demonstrate love and compassion by accommodating Michael and taking him as family.

The emotions are thus portrayed verbally and non-verbally.

Which examples show how conflict and/or power were displayed in the movie?

When Ann adopts a black adolescent (that is Michael), and initially refers to him as her son, her friends criticize her, illustrating the main conflict.

Ann tells her friends that the youngster needs family, and Michael is driven to succeed despite life's obstacles. Ann and Michael both want to improve the boy's position.

What is an example of a supportive communication climate in the film?

An example of a supportive climate is when Collins calls him Michael brother and Ann refers to him as son.

What is an example of a defensive communication climate in the film?

The best example of this is when Ann (defensively) informs her disapproving friends that Michael is determined to achieve despite hurdles in life and that the child needs family.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed...at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

What is the counterclaim of this argument?

A voluntour experience is a necessary addition to an individual's college resume.
The cost of voluntouring is minor in light of what one gets out of the experience.
There are better ways to make a difference than mixing tourism with volunteering.
