But if we talk about the contrasting characteristics then it can be said that the two of them ( the poet and the neighbor) share two contrasting characteristics yet they were potential agents of destruction which were "greed" and "desire". There is a great irony here because two men have to work on the wall together, but they are doing it separately and never seeing each other while keeping a proper distance.

This particular poem represents a sharp contrast between the two views, the one which advocates the idea of building a wall and other who protests about it. As this poem was written during World War 1, the wall is symbolizing all kinds of walls, whether they be religious, political or national.
