Read the poem below and answer the question that follows.

“Happiness Epidemic”
by David Hernandez

Without any warning, the disease
sweeps across the country
like a traveling circus.

People who were once blue,
who slouched from carrying
a bag of misery over one shoulder

are now clinically cheerful.
Symptoms include kind gestures,
a bouncy stride, a smile

bigger than a slice of cantaloupe.
You pray that you will be infected,
hope a happy germ invades your body

and multiplies, spreading merriment
to all your major organs
like door-to-door Christmas carolers

until the virus finally reaches your heart:
that red house at the end of the block
where your deepest wishes reside,

where a dog howls behind a gate
every time that sorrow
pulls his hearse up the driveway.

How does Mrs. Mallard initially react when she learns of her husband's death? In four to five sentences, answer the
question and use evidence from the text to support the ideas.

Answers

She is shocked into silent disbelief, overcome with emotion, struck with a sense of relief at being free from the burden of marriage. She feels this way because she had a good marriage not abusive or anything but now she doesn't have to bend to the will of a husband. Mrs Mallard is on a symbolical journey to a different world where her soul can find eternal peace and liberty. She has been yearning for liberty and love. For an hour she has transitioned to this world where she finds solace and takes a fresh breath of freedom. She is now a widow who will be accepted in society, free to make choices, to have friends, to attend social events, to decide each day what she will do, according to what she wants.  No more bending to the will of a husband, whom she loved most of the time.Mrs. Mallard's reaction is not the typical hysteria, crying and grieving of a wife who has lost her husband, the man she loves. Louise Mallard sits in her room, staring out the window, imaging the life she will now have, free to choose, to explore her likes and dislikes.Mrs. Mallard lives a lifetime in the space of one hour as she imagines what she will do with all her new freedom.  She journeys in her mind, wandering free to enjoy and appreciate the life she sees through her window. In normal circumstances when a person’s spouse passes away, one would think that the surviving spouse would be upset for his/her loss, crying etc.  However, in the case of Mrs. Mallard, she is upset for only a few minutes until she realizes what has happened.  Yes, she has lost her husband, but at the same time, she has gained a new life for herself.  After she locks herself in her room, she begins to think about all that she can do and achieve now that she has become a single woman.

The sentence that uses a modifier correctly is "Soft and calming, the harp provided a peaceful serenade to the audience," in option B, as explained below.

What is a modifier?

A modifier is a word or phrase in a sentence that modifies another word by providing more information about it. In the sentences provided as answer choices in the question, the modifier is the same - "soft and calming."

Usually, the modifier comes right before or right after the word it modifies. That is why some of the sentence provided are incorrect. The modifier "soft and calm" does not apply to all words that follow it:

Audience - It does not make sense to say that the audience was soft and calming as they enjoyed the harp. We can eliminate option A.Harp - This is the best option. It makes sense to say that the harp was soft and calming as it provided the serenade. Option B is the correct one.Sight - This one could make sense, but the problem is the use of "sight" rather than "sound". Harps do not necessarily look soft and calming. We can eliminate option C.Ears - Again, it does not make sense to say the ears were soft and calming. We can eliminate option D as well.

With the information above in mind, we can choose option B as the correct answer to this question.
