In the case of Harriet Jacobs, slavery was extremely abhorrent. When she rebuffed his advances, her master, Dr. Flint, hounded her relentlessly. He tried to force her into having sex with him. Jacobs used drastic steps to fend off Dr. Flint's advances.
In order to protect herself, she made the decision to start a relationship with a white man, also known as a "yokefellow" in legalese. She had the appearance of legal protection thanks to this relationship. She also made the decision to run away to the North and take refuge in an attic of her grandmother's home.
The connection between Jacobs and her mistress provides some illumination on the hierarchical structure of slavery. Because she felt her mistress was the only member of her master's household who understood her situation, Jacobs was immensely devoted to her.
